Featuring 100 Original Illustrations, Oil Paintings, Prints, and Sculptures
Born in the Netherlands in 1910, Leo Lionni became involved in the avant-garde art movement in Italy before working as a graphic designer. During World War II, he was forced to flee due to his Jewish heritage. In the United States, where he emigrated, he expanded his artistic activities to include painting and sculpture. At the age of 49, he created 'Little Blue and Little Yellow' for his grandson, a work now recognized as a masterpiece, marking his entry into the world of picture books.
Lionni viewed the creation of picture books as 'a form of expression to discuss issues that concern me.' Until his death in Italy in 1999, he published nearly 40 picture books, many of which have been translated and published in Japan. His warm and evocative illustrations continue to captivate both children and adults alike.

Embark on a 'Journey of Self-Discovery' with the Protagonists
This exhibition showcases approximately 100 original picture book illustrations, alongside around 30 artworks including oil paintings, prints, and sculptures such as the 'Parallel Plants' series depicting fantastical flora, and the 'Masks' series inspired by his travels in Mexico. The exhibition is organized into four thematic sections—'I Am Myself,' 'Wisdom and Courage,' and others—reflecting on Lionni's 'art of picture books' as he would have reached his centenary.
Lionni's picture books unfold heartwarming narratives centered on the theme of 'living authentically.' The events, viewed from the low perspective of his small protagonists, draw us instantly into a world of imagination.
