What Kind of Year Was 2012?──The "World Press Photo Exhibition," a retrospective of the past year through documentary and press photography, will be held. This year's 56th World Press Photo Contest received submissions from 5,666 professional photographers in 124 countries and regions worldwide, totaling 103,481 photos. Among these, works by 54 photographers from 32 countries and regions were selected across nine categories, including "Spot News," "Contemporary Issues," "Sports Action," and "Nature."

Furthermore, the "World Press Photo of the Year" award is presented to the single most outstanding photograph. This year, the award went to Swedish photographer Paul Hansen for his powerful image capturing the profound grief and anger of men carrying children, killed by Israeli missile strikes in the Gaza Strip, to their funeral.

In addition to Hansen's photograph, the exhibition will feature approximately 160 works, including an award-winning "General News" entry by Australian photographer Daniel Berehulak, who captured the still-scarred town and its people in March 2012, one year after the Great East Japan Earthquake, in Rikuzentakata City, Iwate Prefecture. Many other photographs, such as those depicting the complex Middle Eastern situation, will also be on display.

The Power of Press Photography

In addition to the Tokyo venue, the "World Press Photo Exhibition 2013" is scheduled to tour Osaka, Kyoto, Kusatsu City in Shiga Prefecture, and Beppu City in Oita Prefecture.

The "World Press Photo Exhibition 2013" offers a chance to witness firsthand the realities unfolding across the globe through the lens. It is an opportunity to hear the unspoken voices of people living in corners of the earth, to learn about little-known facts that didn't make the news, and to see new facets of various events.
