Characters Deconstructed and Infused with Abstract Textures
KAWS first gained attention for his artworks featuring familiar characters like SpongeBob and Pinocchio, whose eyes are X-ed out. He has also participated in creating the artwork for Kanye West's 2008 album '808s & Heartbreak' and is known for his collaborations with artists and products.
Now, an exhibition by KAWS, whose global popularity continues to soar, is finally being held in Japan. Displayed are 16 new paintings that, while based on his previous figurative motifs, have been deconstructed and imbued with abstract textures.
Using materials from pop culture and characters deeply familiar to Japanese audiences, KAWS crafts a thrilling psychological collage, marking a new frontier. This is the start of his first full-scale solo exhibition in Japan.
