Manifesting Traces of Eras and Sediment of Time into Serene Imagery
Ayako Mai studied modern art history and drawing in Europe, and in addition to photography, she also works with collage, mixed media, and oil painting. She has been photographing primarily in Europe since 2006.
The exhibition features monochrome works captured by Ayako Mai over three years in Venice, Italy, and Nantes in western France, as well as Paris, filling the venue with a European atmosphere. Landscapes born from eternal history, such as Notre Dame Cathedral and the winter scenery of Venice, are captured through Ayako Mai's unique, nostalgic photographic style.
Mai states, "What I pursued in these cities was the imprint of the 'elusive aspects' that appear in the space between the reality and fiction of each 'place.' It is not a mere record of reality, but a reality that can only be grasped through the dominance of fiction." Her photographic world embodies the traces of eras that have passed and the sediment of time, rendered into serene imagery.
