Prints Exhibited, Emitting an Aura, Themed on "Double Image" and More
Katsura Funakoshi leads the contemporary Japanese art scene with his figurative sculptures that capture the profound and complex nature of the human psyche. Born in Iwate Prefecture in 1951, his work has been exhibited internationally on numerous occasions. He currently serves as a visiting professor at his alma mater, Tokyo Zokei University. Many may be familiar with his works, characterized by their deep gaze, which have been used for book covers.
This new exhibition introduces prints, which can be considered another means of expression for him. Since releasing his first small copperplate print in 1987, Funakoshi has deliberately employed different techniques for each subsequent work. For this new series, he adopted the mezzotint technique, which he describes as "the closest to sculpture I've ever made." By deeply scratching the entire plate, he creates subtle halftones from black to white, resulting in works that are not simple planes but possess a three-dimensional depth.
The venue showcases new prints that radiate a dazzling aura, themed around essential elements surrounding humanity such as nature, dreams, and imagination, as well as "double images." Experience Funakoshi's new charm, discovered through his encounter with the mezzotint technique, with your own eyes.
