Russia, a treasure trove of French painting. The high quality of French art brought to Russia by successive Romanov emperors and nobles, such as Empress Catherine II, and by wealthy merchants who rose to prominence in the 19th century, is said to be so exceptional that even France itself is envious. This was driven by a strong admiration for France, then the leading nation in Europe, and a passionate desire to enrich their own culture.
The legacy accumulated over centuries forms the core of the current Pushkin Museum. This exhibition traces the glorious history of 300 years of French painting through 66 selected masterpieces, from the 17th-century classical master Poussin, the 18th-century Rococo representative Boucher, to Delacroix and Millet who were active after the French Revolution, and further to Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artists such as Monet, Renoir, Cézanne, Van Gogh, Gauguin, Picasso, and Matisse.
Furthermore, a highly anticipated highlight is the "Portrait of Jeanne Samary," painted by Renoir during his Impressionist period, which is acclaimed as his finest portrait. This masterpiece, symbolizing Renoir as the "painter of happiness" with its bright and vibrant colors, will be on display.
Additionally, to enhance the exhibition experience, an official app is available for free viewing on computers and smartphones. Accessible from the official website, it features original manga and essays by renowned contributors including manga artist Ryoko Ikeda, French literature scholar Shigeru Kashima, and author Masahiko Shimada.
The Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts Exhibition: 300 Years of French Painting brings together masterpieces from France that Russia has admired for many years. Visitors can enjoy the exhibition alongside the history of these artworks, collected by emperors, nobles, and entrepreneurs with a passionate desire for their country's development.
