Works Reflecting Contemporary Southeast Asia
The ASEAN countries are experiencing remarkable growth. In this region, often described as "boiling" economically and politically, cutting-edge contemporary artworks are emerging one after another against a backdrop of rapid urbanization and swift changes in lifestyles and social structures. This exhibition features 28 works created since 1999 by 25 artists from a total of 8 countries: Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Myanmar.
From Filipino artist Frank Callagan's photographs capturing a jungle illuminated at night, which expose the realities of contemporary urban surveillance societies and the blurred lines between adjacent spaces, to Singaporean artist Zai Kuning's video work tracking the nomadic sea people over many years, the exhibition delves into lives constrained by political and economic circumstances.
Other highlights include "Bantayan Altar," a work composed of 10 wooden sculptures depicting the "Basi Revolt," a historical uprising in the Philippines during Spanish colonial rule in 1807, and Indonesian female artist Titus Bien's "Bayang-bayang Maha Kecil #9 (Shadows of the Small)," a three-dimensional piece featuring her daughter as the model, inscribed with prayers recited by Muslim women to protect their children. These works, alongside others, reflect not only history and culture but also the present state of Southeast Asia.
During the exhibition period, "Art Cruise in the Museum at Night," offering a guided tour after closing hours, will be held on Saturday, April 27, and Wednesday, May 22. Additionally, gallery talks by curators will take place on Friday, April 26, Friday, May 10, Friday, May 24, and Friday, June 14.
Within the Yokohama Museum of Art, a dense and vibrant jungle of art awaits. Through these works, we hope to feel the dynamism of contemporary Southeast Asia and the power driving its future.
