Pursuing a More Refined and Transparent Expression

Mika Ogasawara has been creating art in Hamburg for 20 years. She is known for her paintings that evoke a sense of being lost in a deep spiritual world while observing the subtle scenes of everyday life, such as tranquil indoor spaces and landscapes where light and darkness contrast.

This exhibition, her third in Tokyo, features recent and new works from 2011 onwards. For Ogasawara, who has consistently built worlds beyond visual perception by juxtaposing the "grand narratives" facing the world with individual "inner narratives," the Great East Japan Earthquake and the nuclear accident were an unprecedented shock.

This shock even stirred her childhood memories, and her works now frequently depict the pure figures of young girls, reminiscent of her early period, and children fearful of an unknown darkness. Meanwhile, in paintings depicting static scenes, such as interiors, she has pursued a more refined and transparent expression.

Mika Ogasawara's paintings are a gateway to her inner world, and at the same time, a mirror reflecting the universe. We invite you to drift through the profound darkness she depicts, or into the contemplative space deep within a place of light.
