One of the 20th Century's Foremost Painters, and an "Artist Difficult to Exhibit"
The First Large-Scale Solo Exhibition in Japan in 30 Years: 'Francis Bacon'
Francis Bacon (1909-1992), considered a peer of Picasso as one of the 20th century's most significant painters, is the subject of a major solo exhibition featuring 33 of his masterpieces and representative works. This exhibition, the first large-scale show in Japan in 30 years, will be held at The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, from Friday, March 8th to Sunday, May 26th. To commemorate the occasion, OPENERS is offering exhibition tickets to 5 pairs (10 people).

Born in Dublin, Ireland, Francis Bacon based himself in London and achieved global acclaim. Many of his major works are held in museum collections, and pieces in private hands command high prices at auction, leading to his reputation as "an artist most difficult to exhibit." This exhibition, held 20 years after his death, marks the first major showing in Japan since a retrospective during his lifetime in 1983, presenting a rare opportunity to directly engage with Bacon's art.
This exhibition brings together precious collections from around the world, including five pieces confirmed to be in Japanese collections, as well as works from the Tate, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the National Gallery of Victoria in Australia. Focusing on the "body," Bacon's most crucial subject, the exhibition traces the evolution of his expressive methods across different periods in three sections.
Furthermore, an epilogue will explore Bacon's influence on his contemporaries, alongside video installations by European and Japanese dancers inspired by his works, which consistently engaged with the tension between space and time.

This is the first exhibition of Bacon's work in Japan since his death, and also the first in Asia. We hope visitors will experience the enduring allure of this artist, who continues to inspire countless creators across genres, through these invaluable works.
