Miyuki Ueda will be present on March 17th (Sun),
March 20th (Wed), 24th (Sun), and 27th (Wed) from 3 PM to 6 PM
The charm of Miyuki Ueda's art lies in the understated beauty of her sumi-e touch. Despite the lack of defined outlines or intricate details, she vividly expresses the inherent appeal of her subjects with a dynamic energy that suggests the fluidity of ink and the sweep of her brush. Her work offers the rich pleasure of hand-drawn art, imbued with fashionable sophistication and, at times, a comical touch that elicits laughter.
Regarding her first major solo exhibition in about five years, "Catch Me in Daikanyama," Ueda commented, "About 30 years ago, my current artistic style was established after I was commissioned to create artwork for 'sale,' a free paper published by photographer Kaoru Ijima. The client was Hollywood Ranch Market, and the designer was Hajime Anzai, a close friend of Ijima."
She further shared her enthusiasm: "In the early 80s, before I could make a living from this profession, I worked part-time at 'Swamy,' a famous bar on Kyu-Yamate Dori. Because it was located behind the Bigi apparel brand, it was an exciting place where people active in the industry, such as Yoshie Inaba, Minako Yokomori of Melrose, Hiroshi Oguchi, and Gen Tarumi of Hollywood Ranch Market, would casually come for drinks. It's no exaggeration to say that I learned about Tokyo here, and my current career began from this experience. This exhibition feels like a blend of Daikanyama from 30 years ago and the present."
For this exhibition in the neighborhood that holds such significance, Ueda has curated a selection of approximately 20 pieces, including representative works from her archives and popular series, as well as about 10 newly created pieces. The exhibition will feature original works on hanging scrolls and scrolls, original illustrations for books and magazines, and limited edition silk screen prints. Original three-dimensional works, scarves, and T-shirts will also be available for purchase.
