ART | YCAM's First Open Call Project Commemorates 10th Anniversary

Seeking Submissions for "Proposals for Future Living" and "Visuals for Imaginary Film Scores"

Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media (YCAM), recognized as a leader in media art and celebrating its 10th anniversary this November, has launched its first open call for submissions. The center is seeking entries for two competitions: the "LIFE by MEDIA International Competition" and the "Visuals for Imaginary Film Scores Competition."

YCAM has consistently provided a platform for diverse artistic expressions that connect our past and future, the natural world and urban culture, through imagination and creativity, while exploring the potential of media technology. To mark a new beginning, YCAM is hosting "LIFE by MEDIA: YCAM 10th Anniversary Festival," themed around "Art, Environment, and Life," from July to December. The competitions are being held in conjunction with this festival.

The "LIFE by MEDIA International Competition" calls for proposals that envision new ways of living and daily life through media. In response to fundamental questions about existence and living that have re-emerged since the earthquake, the competition seeks ideas that transcend genres, including mechanisms or services for communication, sculpture, architecture, video, and installations. The most outstanding proposal will receive a production grant of one million yen and be realized within the local community of Yamaguchi.

The other competition, "Visuals for Imaginary Film Scores Competition," is slightly more complex. It seeks films and visuals inspired by film scores composed for non-existent movies. By reversing the usual process where film music is created to accompany an existing film, this competition aims to provide an opportunity to reconsider the relationship between visuals and music, and the nature of film scores themselves.
Ryuichi Sakamoto

Ryuichi Sakamoto will serve as a judge for both competitions. For the "LIFE by MEDIA International Competition," the judging panel also includes architect Jun Aoki, media artist Koichiro Eto, and FINAL HOME director Kosuke Tsumura. The "Visuals for Imaginary Film Scores Competition" panel features producer Mitsuko Okamoto and film director Tetsuya Mariko, among others.

YCAM, known for its pioneering activities that transcend traditional art boundaries, is seeking new talent. Why not consider applying for this globally watched open call?
