The exhibition 'Tsutsumi no Kotonari - A Study of Sadatake Ise's 'Tsutsumi no Kotonari'' showcases how graphic designer Nobuhiro Yamaguchi and his Origami Design Laboratory interpret 'Tsutsumi no Kotonari,' a book on origami techniques published by Sadatake Ise during the Edo period. Gifts, celebrations, and condolences. In Japan, various items have been wrapped in paper and cloth since ancient times. The Origami Design Laboratory, which re-examines the etiquette of wrapping and tying, known as 'origata,' from a modern design perspective and aims to incorporate it into contemporary life, along with its representative, graphic designer Nobuhiro Yamaguchi, presents 'Tsutsumi no Kotonari - A Study of Sadatake Ise's 'Tsutsumi no Kotonari'', an exhibition that offers a new approach.
Considered the bible of origami, 'Hōyū Zusetu' was published in the mid-Edo period in 1840 by Sadatake Ise, consisting of 'Tsutsumi no Ki' (upper volume) and 'Musubi no Ki' (lower volume). While 'Tsutsumi no Ki' introduces 18 types of origami with illustrations, most of it is occupied by the completed and unfolded diagrams on facing pages.
This exhibition aims to diagram the omitted steps between the completed and unfolded diagrams, and through them, to explain the principles of thought, archetypes, and the cultural unconscious.
During the exhibition, a talk show will be held on February 19 (Tuesday) with Yamaguchi and Makoto Koizumi, a furniture designer who also handled the exhibition's spatial design. On March 2 (Saturday), Yamaguchi will be joined by anthropologist Toshiaki Ishikura, and on March 16 (Saturday), by lacquer artist Akito Akagi. Furthermore, workshops where participants can try their hand at origami will be held on March 2 (Saturday), March 9 (Saturday), and March 16 (Saturday), led by Yamaguchi and members of the Origami Design Laboratory.
For over a decade, how has Yamaguchi and the Origami Design Laboratory engaged with the classics, and what have they created from them? Within this world where Japanese tradition and modernity perform a duet on paper, lie hints that can enrich our lives further.
