Risaku Suzuki's 'Cézanne's Studio' Exhibition

Risaku Suzuki, a photographer, will present his new exhibition, 'Cézanne's Studio,' from Saturday, February 9th to Wednesday, March 27th, at Gallery Koyanagi in Ginza. The exhibition features works that capture even the very atmosphere of the studio where Cézanne spent his later years in northern Provence, France.

Photographs Capturing the Temperature of Wind and Light, Scents, and Dry Air

Born in Wakayama Prefecture in 1963, Risaku Suzuki is a highly acclaimed photographer internationally, known for works that explore the flow of time and the movement of gaze, such as 'Between Sea and Mountains' and 'Okukumano,' which focus on his hometown and sacred ground of Kumano, as well as 'SAKURA' and 'WHITE.' He received the Kimura Ihei Award in 2000 and the Photographic Society of Japan Award in 2008.

This 'Cézanne's Studio' exhibition follows his 2001 series 'Mont Sainte Victoire,' where he climbed the mountain in southern France, a frequent motif in Cézanne's paintings, and traced the great artist's footsteps with his camera.

To create these new works, Suzuki visited the studio where Cézanne spent his final four years, turning his lens towards the motifs that remained within its walls. Much like Cézanne, who valued the interaction between himself and his subject, Suzuki's photographs seem to capture the blowing wind, the temperature of the light, the scents, and even the dry air.

Also featured in this exhibition are video works that question the difference between 'the time spent looking at a photograph' and 'the time it takes for an image to play' by capturing still lifes with a fixed camera.

Cézanne, unlike the religious and history paintings that preceded him, is said to have depicted only what he could see. Through Suzuki's works in 'Cézanne's Studio,' we invite you to re-experience the gaze Cézanne cast within his studio and to feel what lies beyond that line of sight.
