Installation that transforms the gallery into an airport
Born in Aomori Prefecture in 1967, Tomoko Fukushi is currently an associate professor at Joshibi University of Art and Design. She has established a unique style by actively incorporating the "structure" and "grammar" of manga into her work, using whiteboards—tools for conveying messages in daily life—and employing techniques such as panel layouts and "inner speech," writing unspoken thoughts.
She has also garnered attention for her new endeavors, such as distributing a manga titled "Lucky☆Lucky" featuring the character "Little Girl ★ Lucky-chan" to friends via fax, and presenting "Look Look☆Don't Look," also featuring Lucky-chan, on the temporary construction hoarding of the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre.
In this exhibition, the gallery is envisioned as a fictional airport. Fukushi presents new installation works themed around expressing the boundaries between inner and outer worlds, safety and danger, individual identity, and the mixed emotions of pre-flight excitement and anxiety that arise during boarding procedures.
Fukushi's art is created using everyday materials like oil-based markers and magnets, often on whiteboards—found in workplaces, schools, and homes, easily visible to all, used to convey and share messages, and erased once their purpose is served. "I hope that by pausing for a moment before these familiar objects, it can help to shake up established systems and concepts, even just a little," she says. We invite you to step into the 'small airport' she has created.
