ART | A Dialogue Between Film and Sculpture by Two Portuguese Artists

The Exhibition 'MU [Nothing] - Pedro Costa & Rui Chafes' at Hara Museum

An unusual exhibition, 'MU [Nothing] - Pedro Costa & Rui Chafes,' featuring two Portuguese artists working in distinct fields of expression—film and sculpture—will be held at the Hara Museum in Shinagawa from December 7 (Friday) to March 10, 2013 (Sunday).

A Space and Time of Once-in-a-Lifetime Encounters Born from the Confrontation of Opposing Elements

The exhibition 'MU [Nothing] - Pedro Costa & Rui Chafes' brings together two brilliant minds, Pedro Costa, known as a filmmaker who stands at the boundary of documentary and fiction, creating works where serene visual beauty coexists with a destructive worldview, and Rui Chafes, who, representing Portugal at international exhibitions, relentlessly pursues the diverse possibilities of sculptural expression, with a focus on iron. The two, who are also close friends in private life, engage in a dialogue through their works within the museum space.

The two artists previously held a similar exhibition at the Serralves Museum in Porto, Portugal's second-largest city, in 2005. This time, incorporating three new works from each artist, they explore the "confrontation" between the distinct artistic languages of film and sculpture, mindful of the Hara Museum's setting—a former Western-style private residence—and the new essence of Japanese culture.

The exhibition, titled 'MU [Nothing]' in homage to the master of Japanese cinema, Yasujiro Ozu, and inspired by the single character '無' (nothingness) inscribed on his tombstone, comprises a total of 10 works: five video installations and five sculptures. A highlight will be the presentation of film materials from Pedro Costa's representative works, 'In Vanda's Room' and 'Colossal Youth,' alongside Rui Chafes' iron sculptures, reconfigured as installations in a new form.

Throughout the exhibition period, a variety of related events will be held, including an artist talk by Pedro Costa and Rui Chafes scheduled for December 8 (Saturday).

Light and shadow, movement and stillness unfold where two distinct talents meet. We invite you to experience the unique space and time, born from the confrontation of opposing elements, at the Hara Museum.
