Artist File 2013: Featuring Contemporary Artists

The National Art Center, Tokyo, will host the "Artist File" exhibition from January 23 (Wed) to April 1 (Mon), 2013, showcasing artists actively engaged in notable work both domestically and internationally through individual exhibitions. This fifth iteration features eight artists, including three from overseas.

Diverse Expressions Presented Dynamically

"Artist File" is a contemporary art exhibition project initiated by The National Art Center, Tokyo, in 2008. It was conceived as an ongoing project to fulfill its mission of "introducing new trends in art." To provide an overview of the current art scene, several artists are selected from recommendations by curatorial staff and presented in individual exhibitions.

This exhibition does not have a specific theme. Artists of note from various fields will gather, and their diverse expressions, ranging from painting and photography to video and large-scale installations, will be displayed with both care and dynamism.

Artists from a Wide Range of Generations

This year, a total of eight artists are participating, including five Japanese artists and three from the UK, India, and South Korea. There are no restrictions on age or nationality, with artists selected from a wide range of generations, from their 30s to their 60s. Visitors can enjoy not only the works of emerging artists expected to make future contributions but also pieces by artists with long careers whose work has not often been exhibited extensively in Japanese museums, all within the vast 2,000 square meter space.

True to the title "Artist File," information about the participating artists is filed away. The information on the 40 artists introduced from the first exhibition to the present is preserved as an "archive."

The exhibition features a wide range of artistic media. However, all works share the commonality of challenging the possibilities of artistic expression, earnestly observing contemporary society, and being created through introspection. Why not experience the latest in art through their works?
