Capturing Irreplicable Time and Images
The charm of a Polaroid camera lies in the process of waiting for the image to develop over a period of time that is neither too long nor too short. Instant cameras, as they came to be known, were born in 1947 from the work of Polaroid founder Dr. Edwin Herbert Land, and the "SX-70" was created in 1972. Its groundbreaking product design as a foldable single-lens reflex camera made it a favorite of American pop art master Andy Warhol, and the renowned Charles and Ray Eames were involved in its product promotion.
Collaborating on the SX-70 is Wonder Worker Guerrilla Band, a design unit established in Tokyo in 2003 by Daisuke Nagaoka and Katsuaki Araki, who studied architectural design and textiles at Nagaoka Institute of Design. While managing the menswear brands SASQUATCHfabrix. and EOTOTO, they have also been actively involved in numerous creative projects, including participating in "Feel Clothes, Think Clothes" held at Opera City in 2012.
The model customized by Wonder Worker Guerrilla Band this time is known as the ALPHA model, released in 1976, featuring a blue shutter button, a tripod socket on the bottom, and a strap attachment on the back. The leather for this model has been uniquely selected, and iron plates with a rust finish have been applied.
At the venue, a limited edition of 300 sets will be sold, consisting of the collaborative 1970s vintage Polaroid camera "SX-70," along with film featuring a serial number and signature. For this exhibition's motif, Wonder Worker Guerrilla Band focused on "face-in-hole" photo booths, commonly found at tourist spots, which possess a mysterious charm that compels viewers to insert their faces, transforming them into absolute subjects.
This installation, using Polaroid cameras and "face-in-hole" photo booths, captures time and imagery linked to "stories" created by the passage of time and human interaction, and to "nostalgic" landscapes from memory. We invite you to experience the irreplicable world created by Wonder Worker Guerrilla Band at the venue.
