"Year-End Public Production" Event to be Held, Offering a Glimpse into the Creative Process

Tadanori Yokoo leads Japan's contemporary art scene with his diverse styles and ambitious, genre-defying works. The Tadanori Yokoo Museum of Contemporary Art has opened in Kobe City, exhibiting over 3,000 pieces and materials donated or entrusted by the artist. To commemorate its opening, the "Tadanori Yokoo Exhibition: Hanhanpukupukuhanpuku" focuses on his signature motif of "repetition."

Yokoo's works are known for the recurring appearance of specific motifs. For example, his iconic "Pink Girls" painting series from the 1960s was suddenly reproduced in the 1990s and has been intermittently painted ever since. Similarly, the "Y-Junction" series, depicting an alley in Nishiwaki City, Hyogo Prefecture, where he grew up, features the same scene repeatedly, with subtle transformations each time.

In Yokoo's art, "copying" existing images is a crucial element, and he uniquely extends this to his own works, making them subjects for reinterpretation. This is not mere self-imitation but a deliberate practice that serves as an antithesis to the conventional notions that artworks must evolve chronologically and that originality is paramount.

The exhibition showcases numerous motifs rendered with repetitive strokes, sometimes in a Van Gogh-esque style, other times with bold color changes, alongside new works created specifically for this exhibition. Throughout the exhibition period, events such as the "Year-End Public Production," offering a view of his creative process, and the symposium "Post-War Art Archives: Challenges and Prospects" will also be held.

Immerse yourself in Tadanori Yokoo's unique artistic world, where motifs are relentlessly repeated across time and space. We invite you to step into this parallel universe at the museum, now a new sanctuary for Yokoo's art.
