Works Previously Shown Only in London Return to Japan
Born in Shizuoka in 1981, Daisuke Oba graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts Graduate School and has since been at the forefront of emerging artists. He creates paintings using pearlescent acrylic paints, where images and colors continuously transform depending on the shifting light and the viewer's position. This exhibition, aiming to showcase the "possibilities of painting in dialogue with the origins of nature"—a theme he has consistently explored—features new works and represents a further step in his artistic journey. His ambitious creative activities include a major solo exhibition in London in 2011 and his participation in the Aomori Museum of Art this year.
Oba's works are characterized by their perception of painting not as an independent "object," but as something that constantly exists in relation to the viewer, the surrounding environment, and the passage of time. He also has a strong commitment to his techniques, actively engaging in the act of "painting" by scraping paint or using only a single fine-tipped brush.
In his recent works, he has developed a series where he lets Beyblades (spinning tops) play on the canvas, creating artworks from the traces incidentally generated by their intense collisions. This approach has led him to a method of creation that is not mediated by his own hand but is produced through the actions of multiple people.
Additionally, he will present the series titled "LOG." This series, created using computer software, involves first pixelating the brightness and saturation of photographs into 11 tonal levels, then reinterpreting them as a rainbow spectrum to bring them back to life as paintings. Approximately 10 works will be exhibited, including these, which suggest a further challenge to the act of "painting."
In addition to these, the exhibition will feature ongoing series, large-scale works exceeding three meters in width, and works previously shown only in London making their triumphant return to Japan. This is an exhibition not to be missed. Visitors can enjoy the unique worldview of Oba, who has expanded the possibilities of his art through various experiments.
