Byodo-in Temple's Fusuma Paintings Also on Special Display
The exhibition "Akira Yamaguchi - My Name is Akira Yamaguchi, Come One and All" showcases Akira Yamaguchi's latest works, alongside his renowned pieces that meticulously depict figures and architecture using a unique style that blends traditional techniques reminiscent of Yamato-e and Ukiyo-e with canvas and oil paints. This exhibition, held in conjunction with Yamaguchi's dedication of fusuma paintings to the Yorin-an study at Byodo-in Temple, features a diverse range of artworks including drawings, oil paintings, sculptures, and illustrations.
The venue presents works that reflect his unique worldview, which has garnered widespread popularity both in Japan and internationally. These pieces often depict samurai riding motorcycle-like horses, skyscrapers adorned with tiled roofs, and a fusion of past, present, and future timelines, all imbued with critique, humor, and irony, offering a glimpse into his creative process.
Furthermore, the 14 fusuma paintings by Yamaguchi, themed around Uji in Kyoto and dedicated to the important cultural property Yorin-an study within Byodo-in Temple, will be specially exhibited on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays from November 17th (Saturday) to December 2nd (Sunday). It is not to be missed to see how Akira Yamaguchi, a Heisei-era Yamato-e artist, approaches this historic space, which is a Momoyama period structure housing screen paintings by the Kano school artists.
Experience the captivating works of Akira Yamaguchi, who masterfully manipulates time and space through his paintings. We invite you to visit Kyoto in early winter and immerse yourself in the art of an artist who is poised to shape the future of art history.
