Art and "Festival Stalls" with a Street Vibe
GYRE, born in 2007 with the concept "SHOP & THINK" and the meaning of "whirlpool," faces both Omotesando and Cat Street. Omotesando is the main street of Aoyama, lined with brands that define mainstream fashion. In contrast, Cat Street was built as a new ground above the Shibuya River, attracting young people seeking new culture and giving rise to street fashion and other innovative, individualistic cultures. "Michiten," by the Rebirth Project led by Yusuke Iseya, is held to commemorate the 5th anniversary of GYRE, which stands in this special location facing these two distinct streets.
At "Michiten," the significance of this spot where the two streets intersect is expressed through the Rebirth Project's unique approach. Visitors are first greeted by a novel torii gate, serving as the entrance to this "path." Then, an interactive installation inspired by omikuji (fortune slips) and "Genkidama Saisebako" (Energy Ball Offering Box), a Kamakura-carved artwork by artist Noriki Okunishi, appear, creating a "path" infused with a street sensibility.
Furthermore, various products developed by the Rebirth Project are showcased in a "festival stall" style. This includes "Lee BIRTH," which regenerates denim that lay dormant in warehouses into new designs, and "AIRBAG bag," made from recycled car airbags. The exhibition, which aims to create new value in a sustainable society by utilizing waste materials and recycled resources, will also feature sales in the basement space. Additionally, daily talk shows related to product development, as well as events like a "pre-festival" and "harvest festival," will be held during the exhibition period.
Japan's "paths" have historically gathered people, created vibrancy, and served as crossroads of culture. It is worth paying attention to the connection between GYRE, situated at a confluence of different cultures, and the Rebirth Project, which has forged its own path with a unique creative approach.
