A UK-Originating Light Performance by Runners
“Speed of Light Yokohama - 3movements” Held Along Yokohama's Coastline
Japan welcomes "Speed of Light Yokohama - 3movements," an interactive art performance from the UK where participants adorned in suits with LED lights create illuminations as they run. The event will take place on November 3rd (Saturday, holiday) and 4th (Sunday), covering approximately 10 kilometers along Yokohama's coast, from Harbor View Park to Zou-no-Hana Park.

Planned as Part of "Smart Illumination Yokohama 2012"
"Speed of Light," a highlight of Scotland's summer arts festival, the Edinburgh International Festival, debuted in August to immense acclaim. This collaborative project, realized by the UK art collective NVA, known for its dynamic works in natural and urban settings, alongside lighting designers and choreographers, saw 4,000 selected runners don specialized light suits. Moving in choreographed sequences, they illuminated the night landscape, crafting a novel form of art.
This iteration is organized by the British Council, the UK's public body for international cultural relations, as part of "Smart Illumination Yokohama 2012," an event unfolding from October 31st (Wednesday) to November 4th (Sunday) primarily in Yokohama's coastal urban center. This marks the first time the performance is held outside the UK. In Japan, Makiko Izu, a member of the performance group GRINDER-MAN and involved in contemporary dance direction, will choreograph the Yokohama coastal rendition. On the day, 50 runners will traverse approximately 10 kilometers from Harbor View Park to Osanbashi Pier and Zou-no-Hana Park, embodying the choreography and painting the darkness with light.
This innovative, participatory art event merges sport and art. We encourage you to enjoy the night views of "Smart Illumination Yokohama 2012" and experience this new artistic creation woven from light and human movement.
Additionally, they are seeking participants for rehearsals of "Speed of Light Yokohama - 3movements." While the main performance requires participants capable of running 10km, rehearsals are open to those who can engage in moderate physical activity. Please come dressed in comfortable attire for the rehearsals. Participants will wear the light suits and are expected to follow the artists' instructions, which may include some running.
