Expanding the Infinite Charm of Books

As a joint project between Japan, China, and South Korea, the [Book & Architecture] exhibition, featuring a collaboration between books and architecture, is scheduled to take place. About Locus Design Forum

Having adopted modernism from the West, Japan, China, and South Korea have each assimilated it within their local contexts, responding in their own ways. The Locus Design Forum serves as a platform for the shared cultural sphere of Kanji civilization, which shares reason and sensibility, to clarify its own coordinates and transmit a common cultural message to the present and future.

"LOCUS" is a portmanteau of "location" and "local," meaning "place" in Latin. Historian Arnold Toynbee stated that the fate of civilizations lies in "challenge" and "response." This forum considers these challenges and responses as its mission and conducts its activities accordingly.

About the [Book & Architecture] Exhibition

The concept began with a call from Mr. Lee Ki-woong, who established Book City in Paju, South Korea, and architect Mr. Fumihiko Maki. As the first project of the Locus Design Forum, the "Book & Architecture Exhibition – The Universe of Books," a collaboration between books and architecture, will be held. Four sets of representative designers and architects from Japan, China, and South Korea will compete with "books" as their theme, presenting diverse possibilities and interpretations of books through their creation and installation. This is an international exhibition.

Books, as the "architecture of words," and architecture, as the "language of space," have both profoundly influenced human history and are deeply connected to the nature of human existence. Meanwhile, the development of digital technology has raised significant questions about the original meanings of books and architecture. This exhibition aims to respond to the times by creatively exploring the potential of books and architecture through the collaborative efforts of designers and architects from three countries, and by creating a multifaceted space (LOCUS) that bridges the gap between digital and analog.

The exhibition will feature book installations created by four invited architects and designers each from China, South Korea, and Japan. Additionally, approximately 30 outstanding works selected from the international competition for book design (actual works) on the theme "The Universe of Books" will be displayed.
