Australian painter Shonah Trescott is holding her second solo exhibition. Her works will be on display at Ando Gallery in Koto Ward from Tuesday, September 11th to Saturday, December 8th.

The Overwhelming Nature of Ny-Ålesund, Arctic

This past May, Shonah Trescott spent a month in Ny-Ålesund, located at 79 degrees north latitude in the Svalbard archipelago of the Arctic Circle, capturing the essence of the great outdoors in her art amidst the extreme cold. Ny-Ålesund, once a thriving coal mining town rich in natural resources, is now an international hub for polar science and ecological research, with observation bases established by 10 countries including Norway, Germany, France, and Japan. Research in environmental fields, such as ozone layer depletion and atmospheric studies, is actively conducted here. During her time spent with the local community and scientists, Trescott deepened her contemplation of the accelerating global warming in the Arctic, while also being captivated by the overwhelming nature and history of Ny-Ålesund.

Works Filled with Sealed Legends

The landscapes depicted through Shonah Trescott's eyes, along with sealed legends and stories, present a world where abstraction and figuration coexist, clash, and occasionally merge. Her pursuit is painting as a means to captivatingly reveal the visual expanse that lies between the appearance of nature and the realm of stories and concepts. This exhibition features paintings, photographs, and silkscreen prints created based on her experiences in the Arctic.

Born in Australia in 1982. Graduated from the National Art School in Sydney with a major in painting. Currently based in Berlin. In 2010, her first solo exhibition in Japan, 'Mankind, Nature, Myth,' garnered attention for its paintings depicting the primal relationship between humans and nature.
