The First Initiative of Towada Art Center's "Arts Cube Project"
Takashi Kuribayashi is known for creating works themed around "boundaries." Until September 2nd (Sunday), at Towada Art Center and other venues, the exhibition "WATER >│

The exhibition focuses on large-scale new installations and video works, centered around the theme of "water."
The "Arts Cube Project" aims to install "homes (= Cubes)" throughout Towada City where art can be appreciated everywhere. As the first initiative, a plan was conceived to utilize the blessed environment unique to Oirase—boasting some of Japan's most beautiful scenery and serving as a motif for Taro Okamoto and numerous other artworks—as an art space. A highly expandable "home for art" has been newly established within the hotel. This endeavor will continue, with contemporary art pieces to be exhibited in the future.
For this exhibition, Takashi Kuribayashi collaborated with Sanyo Trading Co., Ltd.'s Aomori Factory, one of its domestic production bases, which he partnered with in 2010 to create art utilizing sewing technology. Employing the factory's high-level sewing skills, a three-dimensional penguin artwork emerges, symbolizing for him the "boundary" between land and water, freely traversing both.
The penguins in this exhibition symbolize the "boundary" for Mr. Kuribayashi, freely moving between land and water.
Penguins by Takashi Kuribayashi have appeared amidst the beautiful Oirase forest and environment. We invite you to savor a different facet of art, distinct from what you might experience in a museum.
