A Collaboration Between Araki and Instant Film That Transforms with Its Environment

Nobuyoshi Araki has always said, "Photography is me." He always carries a camera, walking through Tokyo's backstreets, from taxi windows, on his home balcony... He is a photographer who pours his full energy into pressing the shutter in every location, and he favors various cameras, including compact cameras and 35mm SLRs. One of these is the Polaroid camera.

In 2008, Polaroid Corporation withdrew from the instant film business. Amidst this, "Impossible Project," which took over the machinery and technicians and challenged itself with analog instant film, created 20x24 inch instant film. This film and Araki's collaboration has now been realized.

The 20x24 inch film previously produced by Polaroid Corporation was primarily for practical use, active in medical and architectural fields due to its high-resolution reproduction and speedy development capabilities. In contrast, the film newly created by "Impossible Project" can sometimes take several months for the developer to dry, and it is a film that transforms and continues to change depending on environmental factors such as temperature and humidity.

At the end of 2011, the world's largest Polaroid vintage instant camera, weighing 200 kilograms and measuring 20x24 inches, arrived in Japan. Multiple technicians were present at the shooting site to achieve focus and to measure the appropriate amount of developing solution flowing on the film by ear. Facing his long-time muse KaoRi, Nobuyoshi Araki conducted a tense shoot, anticipating the final result. This collection of works will be publicly unveiled for the first time.

To coincide with this exhibition, a limited edition of 75 artist-signed photobooks, the same size as the 20x24 inch film, will be published. At Impossible Project Space, key works from "Iei BLACK FRAME," which was held in Taipei last June and achieved great success, will also be on display.

This is a miraculous encounter between Araki and instant film, born with entirely different characteristics from before. These are works that can be called miracles, generated through the interplay of small coincidences and inevitabilities, woven with the passage of time.
