Weaving the Depths of the Human Psyche into Textiles

HOSOO is a Nishijin-ori textile house founded in 1688. While typical weaving structures consist of one or two layers, Nishijin-ori can have between ten and fifteen layers. HOSOO's textiles, in particular, are constructed with an even greater number of layers by individually controlling 9,000 warp threads, giving the fabric itself the characteristic of an architecture.

Under the concept of "More Than Textile," HOSOO is engaged in developing diverse textiles. Six years ago, they developed the world's only Nishijin-ori loom capable of weaving fabric at the standard global width of 150cm.

This innovation has enabled Nishijin-ori, traditionally confined to kimono production, to expand into the global art and fashion arenas. Recently, HOSOO has also been exploring collaborations with cutting-edge technologies such as biotechnology.

This exhibition marks a significant collaboration with film director David Lynch.

Titled "DAVID LYNCH meets HOSOO," this exhibition is an unprecedented project that explores expressing the human subconscious through textiles. The encounter with Lynch, one of the 21st century's defining creators, offers a new way to represent contemporary Nishijin-ori, symbolizing one facet of "More than Textile."

Regarding the "DAVID LYNCH meets HOSOO" exhibition, HOSOO Masataka, Director of HOSOO, commented, "'More Than Textile' means inheriting a long history and creating textile expressions that overturn existing concepts. I believe this is how we will forge traditions for the next 100 or 200 years."
