ART | A 50-Year-Old Wooden Apartment Building Transformed into an Art Space

Hagiso's Farewell: The 'Hagiennale 2012' Exhibition

Hagiso, a wooden apartment building in Yanaka, Tokyo, with a history of approximately 50 years, has been cherished since 2004 as a residence and studio for students from art universities. This spring, facing demolition, it will close its doors. In its place, artists connected to Hagiso are presenting 'Hagiennale 2012,' an exhibition utilizing the entire apartment space, running until Sunday, March 18th.

An Exhibition That Evolves During Its Run

Hagiso, a wooden apartment building in Tokyo's Yanaka district, approximately 50 years old, was long used as rental housing but had become vacant in recent years. However, in 2004, it was reborn as a shared house and studio for architecture students, undergoing active renovations to adapt to their needs. Currently, the first floor comprises two private rooms, two studios, and shared facilities like a bath, toilet, and kitchen, while the second floor has four private rooms. Hagiso, steeped in history, is scheduled to close this spring due to aging and urban redevelopment. In conjunction with this, 'Hagiennale 2012' has been organized to commemorate Hagiso's final chapter.

The exhibition features over a dozen artists who have been past residents or are otherwise connected to Hagiso. Each artist presents their work in their former private rooms or various other spaces, their diverse interpretations converging to create a unified environment, celebrating Hagiso's graceful conclusion. A closing party is also scheduled for Saturday, March 17th.

Throughout the exhibition period, artworks will be modified, added, or dismantled, ensuring Hagiso continues to transform until its final day. We invite you to experience this unique, ephemeral art that has supported people's lives and inspired students' creativity for so long.
