A Carmen Expressed Through Mature Experience
María Pagés continues to create unprecedented works by blending flamenco tradition with innovative ideas. She joined the company of Antonio Gades, a pioneer who elevated Spanish dance from traditional forms to performing arts, at the age of 15. In 1990, she established her own dance company. Her starring role in 'Riverdance,' which sparked a explosive boom, propelled her to stardom. Since then, she has not only performed on stage but also appeared in films, actively sharing the allure of flamenco.
'Carmen' is a tragic love story between the free-spirited Carmen and Don José, who is consumed by her. The Spanish woman Carmen, as depicted by Prosper Mérimée, is synonymous with the femme fatale who manipulates men. Consequently, many still associate the image of Spanish women with 'Carmen.' However, María Pagés found it unacceptable to confine women to such stereotypes.
'This production has no story. I wanted to tell the story of real women in our own words,' she comments. In her latest work, she portrays a 'Carmen' for a new era, creating a new heroine who celebrates all women, rather than being a product of male imagination.
María states, 'Carmen lives within every woman. We are all Carmen.'
Interspersed with the famous music of Georges Bizet, this new 'Carmen' evokes an exotic atmosphere while delving into deeper emotions. We invite you to experience María Pagés' passionate dance and the moving harmony of sound and spirit that only flamenco can provide.
