The Power to Embrace Ordinary Daily Life and Connect It to Creation
Our fourth guest is Oki Sato, representative of Design Office nendo. In the first part, it was revealed that Sato's past life was that of a traveling performer. In this second part, he discusses another past life and his current work.

The Mission to Express the "Original"
ItoMr. Sato, you have a constitution that easily picks up on the vibrations of others' emotions and energy. You switch gears for work, so it might not be apparent, but the moment you're alone, you must feel utterly exhausted.
SatoThat's right, I get tired very easily. I'm always in a receptive state. But my wife sometimes tells me to be more considerate (laughs).
ItoWhen you're unconsciously being considerate of others outside, you probably let your true self show with those you allow into your personal space. Your switch is off, so you often zone out, which might appear as indifference to those around you.
SatoI find myself staring at things like water droplets in a cup for ages (laughs).
ItoYou naturally gravitate towards the simple pleasures of everyday life. However, even when you're having tea and gazing at water droplets, I believe you're absorbing the entire world—the ambient noise, the sounds of cars, the presence of people—through your body. Experiencing the everyday world through your senses connects to your creativity. Therefore, it's only natural that your profession involves expression. You're a designer now, but with your strong intellectual curiosity, you could do anything. You delve deeply into what interests you, and your soul's inherent mission is to mix knowledge and everyday experiences to create original wisdom. This manifests as "expression," whether through design, stage direction, or anything else you create that resonates with and brings joy to others.
SatoI really enjoy completely new challenges. Subjects I've never even considered before.
ItoBecause you find joy in creating something original. The subject matter itself probably doesn't matter.
SatoThat's right. While I enjoy my current life, I could see myself doing something other than design in ten years. I'd love to run a Japanese confectionery shop, for instance.
ItoYou could certainly do that. Japanese confectionery is an art form, and it involves creating something original.
SatoAh, I see. So, what I'd be doing is essentially the same thing...
ItoYou've already started something new this year. You'll enter another stage of growth in two years.
SatoReally? That's a relief! I would have been worried if you'd said six months (laughs). I definitely wouldn't make it in time.
ItoYou'll also incorporate different roles. You'll step up from there. You likely have themes you wish to explore throughout your life.
SatoI tend to get bored easily, but I've never tired of design itself.
ItoYou're more of an 'expresser' than a creator. You take a hundred pieces of knowledge and transform them into one original creation. You'll likely spend your life searching for that "ultimate" work.
SatoIt's true that somewhere in the back of my mind, I might believe there's nothing I can't do. Fields I haven't explored yet include fashion, cooking, and music. But I also feel that if I cut back on other things by about half and made time, I could probably make something happen in those areas.
ItoYou can. Not by composing music or singing, but perhaps by being involved in design or spatial creation. You might find yourself saying, 'I tried this, and it just worked out.'
SatoYes, that's usually how it goes. I don't really experience the 'labor pains' of creation.
Traveling Performer and Another Past Life
SatoI wanted to ask, do I have a guardian spirit?
ItoYes, you do. You also have ancestors and higher-dimensional beings who have never had a physical body.
SatoKnowing I'm being watched makes me nervous...
ItoAlso, besides the traveling performer, I see another past life. Is it that of a housewife?
SatoA housewife!?
ItoNot someone with a job, but a woman devoted to her husband; a housewife, right?
SatoI can really relate to that! I love doing chores like laundry. When I talk to clients, I use an analogy: 'We're not about gathering top-tier ingredients to make a gourmet meal, but rather about creating something delicious from leftovers in the fridge.' It's rare to design under ideal conditions, isn't it? Often, we're asked to make something work with limited resources, and I enjoy that process.
ItoSeeing both the wandering performer and the housewife simultaneously suggests a desire for a stable base, yet an unwillingness to be confined to one place. The common thread is that neither persona fully expresses 'the self.' You were playing a different character as a performer, or devoted yourself to others without asserting yourself as a housewife.
SatoI see. So many elements are mixed together.
ItoYou have a grand theme, though. It's about actively engaging with society and expressing yourself. The method of expression doesn't matter.
SatoAlso, may I ask a silly question? I've been having similar dreams frequently. There are three: one is being put on a stage. I have no script, no lines, no sheet music, and I can't play any instruments, yet I'm handed an instrument and made to stand there.
ItoThat's from a past life (laughs).
SatoIs it? Another dream is flying, but at an extremely low altitude. Sometimes my feet touch the ground, but I'm moving at a considerable speed and can't stop. If my feet don't touch, it feels dangerous, and I can barely change direction at that speed. The third dream is about losing teeth. They break or fall out for no reason. I just think, 'Oh, my tooth fell out again.'
ItoYou're a timid person with a lot of curiosity. You want to be on stage but are afraid; you want to fly but feel anxious if your feet don't touch the ground. Losing teeth signifies anxiety. However, when teeth fall out, new ones grow in, so it also represents a time of change. By the way, your turning point was around ages 25-26.
The Milan Salone, a Turning Point
SatoAt 25 or 26, I was at the Milan Salone, right at the beginning of my career. Personally, I consider the lighting piece "hanabi" from 2006 a turning point. It used heat-treated shape-memory alloy, so it bloomed with light from the heat of the bulb when turned on.
ItoAmazing. That's like an invention!
SatoAgain, it wasn't something I struggled to create; it was more of an idea that I pursued, and it just worked out.
ItoAnd have there been any significant changes for you in the past year or two?
SatoLast year... there was the Lexus project at the Milan Salone!LexusIt was an installation. That was certainly demanding.
ItoI got the impression that you felt you had to become someone new to get through it.
SatoYes, the entire office was mobilized. It was a completely new undertaking. I didn't realize it at the time, but people kept telling me I'd lost weight. We were working through the nights.
ItoWithout that experience, you would have struggled even more.
SatoIs there anything I should focus on going forward?
ItoIt's about communicating your feelings and thoughts to those around you. For those close to you, try to convey your feelings through your voice. It's not about singing or dancing, but it's a form of self-expression. This will also help you create better work.
Finally, what is Oki Sato to Reika Ito?
