We Asked Everyone: "What Does Maze Mean to You?"
This time, we reached out to Maze Featuring Frankie Beverly and gathered comments from notable figures in response to the direct question, "What does Maze mean to you?" We are pleased to report their insights. For more details, please visit the Cotton Club website.
Soul queen Aretha Franklin is a devoted Maze fan, stating, "Maze's music has a familiar groove and vibe, and 'Happy Feeling’s' in particular is a song that truly makes you happy."
"A special presence that can convey the joy of music."
The O’Jays, stalwarts of Philly soul, offer their highest praise to their friend Frankie, a fellow Philadelphian who has been at the forefront for over 40 years.
Former NBA superstar Magic Johnson says, "Maze featuring Frankie Beverly is one of my favorite groups of all time," and he attends their concerts.
Raphael Saadiq, who recently performed at Blue Note Tokyo.
When asked for his thoughts on the rarity of Maze visiting Japan and performing in a club setting, he paused, then commented, "When the people of Japan witness it, they'll understand its value," before departing from Narita Airport.

We attempted to interview the members of Mint Condition, who performed at the Cotton Club in July, during their bus journey. As soon as the core member Storkley began speaking, each member in the back seats leaned forward, and eventually, they all gathered around Storkley in the front, enthusiastically sharing their thoughts.

This is understandable, as Mint Condition also participated in the Maze Tribute CD released this summer (featuring esteemed artists like Mary J. Blige, Joe, and Musiq Soulchild). Their first words were:
"Maze playing at the Cotton Club? No way."
Even when shown the flyer, they responded with "Nah...", genuinely disbelieving. Storkley, speaking about Maze's immense influence on them, said, "We owe our ability to perform in Japan to them. We are like branches extending from the great tree that is Maze. I still vividly remember the shock of seeing Maze in concert in my hometown 12 years ago."
Regarding Maze performing in a Japanese club with only 180 seats, he remained incredulous, "Honestly, I can't believe it. Are they really doing it at the Cotton Club??"
One Show Per Day – Additional Seats Being Added!
Michael Cooper of Con Funk Shun recounts a chance encounter with Frankie Beverly at a luxury car dealership in California several years ago. He recalls the moment he nervously introduced himself as "unforgettable."
He had never felt such warmth from anyone he had met before, and he was deeply moved, finding "real soul" in Maze's music, just as in their songs.
Ahead of Maze's Japan tour, the members of Con Funk Shun shared, "If you're a true soul music fan, you absolutely cannot miss this chance. We genuinely want to return from America for this performance. Because Maze will be playing at the Cotton Club??? We can't believe it."
Finally, it's important to note their support from the Hip Hop community.
When discussing Maze within Japan's Hip Hop scene, there is no one more fitting than this individual.
Muro commented, "Maze's songs, including 'Before I Let Go,' beloved in the Hip Hop scene, and Frankie's beautiful voice, have always been a comforting lullaby for good old N.Y.C."
In September 2009, Maze featuring Frankie Beverly will finally visit Japan.
Tickets are nearly sold out for most dates, but additional seats are currently being added for each show.
