The Intimate and Beautiful Relationship Between Parties and Fashion

As host for BAPE®'s 15th anniversary party, NIGO® invited 100 select guests to a grand dinner, followed by an after-party for approximately 300. For this second installment of our party talk, we asked him about fashion.

Summary by TOKYO SistersPhoto by Jamandfix

Pharrell Williams, Madonna, Natalie Portman!

— Please tell us about party fashion. What are the key fashion points you consider when attending a party?

NIGO®I’m the type of person who wears jeans everywhere. But recently, I’ve started thinking that I should dress up a bit for parties… I’ve begun wearing jackets, suits, or at least a tie. I’m also more conscious of dress codes. Even if it’s not something obvious, I try to wear something that suits the purpose of the party.

TOKYO SistersAt parties overseas, everyone seems to enjoy the dress code while coming together for the event. We also feel that dress codes are indeed one of the fun elements of a party!

— Are there any celebrities you find particularly stylish?

NIGO®Pharrell, maybe? I think Pharrell is stylish. He’s a musician, but he also understands fashion. It’s rare to find someone who balances both so well. For example, if I’m thinking that tennis might be the next trend, Pharrell might show up dressed in a way that reflects tennis (laughs).

— Moving on to women, who is the most stylish person you’ve ever encountered?

NIGO®I think all the women who come to parties are quite stylish. On the other hand, it’s also true that a certain level of fashion is needed to stand out. Unfortunately, lately, for better or worse, I haven’t seen anyone who really makes me think, ‘Wow!’ (laughs). My first impression of Madonna wasn’t about her style, but rather that she seemed like a very kind person.
Oh, and Natalie Portman! She was incredibly nice. She came to the 2nd-anniversary party for our BAPE® NY store. She told me, ‘I’ll contact you when I’m in Tokyo,’ and I thought it was just a polite gesture. But when she visited Japan, she actually reached out and came to my studio. I was truly happy. Perhaps I look more at a person’s aura and inner self than at what they’re wearing.

SistersIndeed, the sense of “style” likely comes from both within and without! People who are simply dressed up without understanding the purpose of the party always seem a bit awkward, and that feeling is conveyed to those around them (sweat).

The Connection Between People Who Enjoy Parties

— Recently, there's been an increase in globally-focused charity parties, like Madonna's collaboration with Gucci or Hidetoshi Nakata's collaboration with LV. What are your thoughts on this?

NIGO®It’s undoubtedly a good thing, but don’t you think celebrity charity parties have become a bit of a trend? When you consider the expenses of lavish parties, I do wonder how much is actually being donated as charity. In America, donations are tax-deductible, but in Japan, taxes don’t change even with donations. This might also be a factor in holding charity parties in Tokyo.
However, Hide’s charity gala sounded interesting. Unfortunately, I couldn’t attend…
Overseas, there are definitely people with influence in the industry and among celebrities, and when they invite people, everyone gathers. This established style means that even when holding the same kind of charity party, the situation in Japan and America would be quite different.

SistersThat’s right. Abroad, there are figures like major producers who, when they extend an invitation, can gather any celebrity instantly. You can feel a certain momentum or power behind parties like that. Perhaps Japan lacks such powerful party orchestrators. It often feels like the guests’ agencies are in charge (sweat). I feel there should be more connections between people enjoying parties, not just business ties.

— Looking ahead, how do you think the Tokyo party scene needs to evolve?

NIGO®I believe having spaces that can be shared with celebrities is important. Wouldn’t it be exciting if Jay-Z or Janet Jackson were in a raised booth at a club or party? In New York, there are always such places, and many clubs are lively every night, even on weekdays. The same applies to parties. It would be interesting if Tokyo also had clubs and venues where celebrities could casually drop by anytime. Preferably, places with a focus on good drinks too (laughs).
However, I might actually enjoy organizing parties and clubs more than going out to them (laughs).

SistersIndeed, celebrities are celebrities. They are entertainers. There’s no doubt they liven up the atmosphere. If Madonna were in the next booth, it would certainly lift your spirits (laughs). Thinking about it, entertainers are people who know how to have fun. They are the ones who make festivals exciting! I wish they would lead the party scene more! (laughs)

Party + Fashion = ( ) What would you answer?

— Which global cities are you currently focusing on in terms of fashion and the nightlife scene?

NIGO®New York remains constant, I think. It’s always stable, and because people gather there, there are parties hosted by magazines and brands almost every day.

NIGO®×TOKYO Sisters Party Talk (2)

The Intimate and Beautiful Relationship Between Parties and Fashion

SistersNew York is indeed strong. However, Tokyo is now one of the cities attracting attention, so we want to see it become even more vibrant! In Tokyo’s own way! But perhaps because we’ve been incorporating overseas party styles, there’s a sense of having done it all (sweat)?

— We are currently producing a film tentatively titled 'TOKYO Sisters' that incorporates the Tokyo party scene. What kind of scene do you think would be essential for a Tokyo-style party in that film? And what is the icon of Tokyo parties?

NIGO®A night view from a high place in Tokyo is indispensable, wouldn’t you say? The Tokyo cityscape spreading out below is unique. It would be perfect if you could see the Tokyo Tower. A party in a high-rise building in Tokyo, overlooking the night view, would be wonderful.

SistersPerhaps so. Looking at the Tokyo night view makes me love this city anew. Mori Art Museum in Hills has also become a definite icon of Tokyo as a museum with a night view. The Tokyo night view is truly an icon of Tokyo! Maybe we should enjoy Tokyo’s high-rises instead of staying underground! It would surely lift our spirits!

— Lastly, if we say Party + Fashion = ( ), what would you put in the ( )?

NIGO®Hmm. That’s difficult… but I guess it would be ‘people,’ wouldn’t it?

SistersIt all starts with ‘people’!

Before discussing the format of a party, perhaps the spirit of each person enjoying the party is the most essential element! It’s true that people create parties. Although the Tokyo party scene might feel like it’s been done to death, perhaps this is precisely why an era of uniquely Tokyo parties has begun.
I’m really looking forward to the mature Tokyo party scene of the future ♪

— Thank you very much!
