Part 36: Stories of 'Clothing' - Loafers

No. 36
A Tale of "Clothing" - The Loafer Edition

Summer is truly here. Many of you are likely excited about the approaching vacation. As we tend to wear lighter clothing this time of year, we also want our footwear to feel a bit lighter, opting for loafers. There's a wonderful feeling in wearing loafers that fit your feet perfectly, especially with bare feet!

Loafer Comfort Hinges on Width

My love for loafers began in the first year of junior high school, and I've honestly lost count of how many pairs I've owned since then. Ever since I became interested in fashion, loafers have always been a close companion; I probably even wore them on my first date (laughs). However, it took quite some time and effort to find shoes that truly fit my feet.

Around the age of 23, when I started working, I decided I wanted a new pair of loafers and visited a specialty store for British gentleman's shoes. I was, of course, fully intending to buy a pair (laughs). But my feet are extremely narrow (width-wise), and even at a reputable store with a good selection, I couldn't find loafers that fit my size.
As you know, slip-on shoes like loafers don't have laces, so if they aren't a perfect fit, they're practically unwearable.

Discouraged by the thought that I might not have shoes that fit me, I later had the opportunity to visit Paris and went to what is considered a high-end shoe store there. It was a famous establishment, a bit intimidating. I opened the door feeling like I had finally entered adulthood.
Inside, there were only a few chairs and footrests. Not a single pair of shoes was on display. Once I told them the design I liked from the shoes in the window, a shoefitter would meticulously measure my foot size and width, then bring out a few pairs from the back. Through a one-on-one consultation, they would help me select the best-fitting pair.

However, after measuring my feet, the shoefitter paused in thought. "Perhaps... we might not have shoes that fit you..." he said. Just as I was about to feel disappointed again, I tried on a pair with the narrowest width available at the store, a "Width B," and they were a perfect fit!
Finally, I had found a pair of loafers that fit like a glove, a truly perfect size.

Since then, even if I've strayed and bought loafers from other stores, I've always ended up not wearing them. For me, loafers are defined by the "Width B" from that particular store.

Loafers with Bare Feet, Especially in Summer!

Good shoes, as you wear them in, mold to your feet until they feel like a single unit, offering exceptional comfort. With proper care, they also last an astonishingly long time. I currently have five pairs in rotation, including ones with resoled soles three times: navy, camel, a camel and white combination, black, and brown suede.

Especially in summer, we want to keep our feet light and ideally wear loafers casually with bare feet. I often hear concerns about foot odor inside shoes, but if you let any pair of shoes air out for about three days in a well-ventilated place after each wear, they won't smell. Just like people, shoes shouldn't be overworked. Especially in summer, they need adequate rest, don't you think?
