Go Ueki and Keiko Toda Discuss Their 2008 Summer T-Shirts (Part 2)

Inspiring Each Other, Towards a New World

Collaborating on T-shirts and towels, participating in Ms. Toda's casual live shows, and offering songs to Ms. Toda – the two are challenging new things while inspiring each other's worlds. The conversation expands from work in the latter half of 2008 to discussions on theater.

The Approach is Exactly the Same for Both Stage and Creation

—Ms. Toda, you also receive new inspiration from co-starring with Mr. Ueki, don't you?

TodaOf course. Go is always cool with the PaniCrew members, but I wonder if we can utilize his talent outside of that field, or do something new. It would be even better if we could do it together enjoyably.
I believe our strengths align, making 1+1 greater than 2, and we can create something truly creative. I want to try again.

UekiThe amazing thing about Nee-san is that she always aims for her best, even when no one is watching. Her approach is the same for both stage performances and creative work. I want to think about things for the autumn and winter seasons too.

—Now, what are your plans for the future?

TodaI have the Fuji TV Getsu 9 drama 'Galileo' and the two-hour drama 'Detective Saburo Shin'. There's also a movie filming scheduled for release next spring, and I'll be recording for music variety shows this summer. Also, the DVD 'I Love Lucy Season 1' Complete Box will be released on July 25th.

UekiI'm taking it easy (laughs).
After finishing the stage play co-starring with Mr. Hisahiro Ogura of SET, I will appear in the musical 'Grease' at Aoyama Theatre in the fall.

—This is a simple question, but do you ask Ms. Toda for acting advice?

UekiNo (laughs), it's difficult to ask for advice. After the director tells me various things, it's hard to bring the script to Nee-san and ask for advice. And if I asked from the beginning, it would be rude. I prefer to think it through myself before asking.

TodaBut by that point, it's too late (laughs). Once a certain shape has formed, it's too late because the habits become ingrained.

UekiBut still, I want to try to figure it out myself before asking.

TodaI ask right away, though. Human time is limited (laughs). Don't you think it's better to cut out unnecessary things, go for it, and then leap even further from there?

—That's a very 'Ms. Toda' answer!

TodaThe other day, he brought me the script after quite some time had passed.

UekiI asked after breaking out of my shell. It was the first class I've ever had that didn't make me sleepy (laughs).

TodaI thought, 'He finally asked!' (laughs)

UekiI was too embarrassed to even take the script out of my bag.

TodaWhen Go asked me for advice, it was incredibly educational for me as an actor. He tries to understand the lines and grasp what's important in them, so I think, 'How would I say this? How would I think about this?' It requires considerable skill on my part too. There are many ways to deliver a line, and choosing one to offer him carries immense responsibility. I thought, 'This is truly a learning experience.' While thinking, 'Lines are interesting,' I hid that from Go (laughs) and said, 'This is how you do it.' I'm not good at teaching others, but if asked, I'm the type to give 200%.

—It feels like we've heard a secret of Ms. Toda's. Thank you.
