Part 28: About the M.Y. LABEL Shop (Part 2)

About M.Y.LABEL Shop (Part 2)

My Cherished Space

Continuing from last time, I'll talk about the 'M.Y.LABEL' shop, designed by my friend Masamichi Katayama of Wonderwall. I was determined to create a store where one could experience the thrill of choosing something special, much like with a large drawer from 'Lorenzi'...

A Perfectly Calculated, Exquisite Balance

My designs often feature hard, sharp, and cool imagery, using materials like metal, stone, and black. So, for the shop, I specifically requested a 'soft atmosphere, without using any black.'
Regarding the aesthetic, I expressed my preference for the warmth of wood, but not a heavy, substantial feel – rather, something light. I also wanted to avoid anything that looked brand new. These requests were discussed for hours, interspersed with casual conversation.

Needless to say, I eagerly awaited the initial presentation. I was keen to see how closely the first meeting could bring us to my ideal. At that point, I still envisioned a collaborative process, working together with him to build the shop.

However. The presented design was, regrettably (!), flawless. My personal taste, filtered through Masamichi Katayama, was perfectly realized in every aspect, from the form and size to the smallest details. We had only discussed fragmented ideas, yet he was incredibly 'sensitive' to my intentions and provided 'accurate' responses. I was both impressed and a little frustrated. In that moment, I was so surprised and moved that I honestly told him, 'I surrender' (laughs). In the end, the only change we made was to opt for grey fabric upholstery for the chairs.

A Shop Filled Only With What I Desire

Touching on the details, the floor, though made of new material, was deliberately ground to give it the appearance of reclaimed wood, creating a warm wooden floor that doesn't feel freshly laid. The shop also features a display window resembling a series of small windows, a large mirror covering an entire wall, a counter front in dark grey instead of black, and an overall symmetrical design – my preferences are wonderfully reflected.

In fact, I sometimes work at the shop's large table and chairs(Herman Miller 'Aluminum Group Chair' - see The 28th, 'Talks on Living: Chairs'), and it's a truly calming space. The short approach from the street ensures tranquility, and sometimes I enjoy a drink while watching people pass by.
However, from the outside, it's not immediately clear what kind of shop it is. Some people mistakenly enter, thinking it might be a showroom? Or a chocolate shop? (laughs).
If you have the chance, please do visit 'M.Y.LABEL,' my cherished space. We look forward to welcoming you with exciting products displayed in our large drawers.
