Act III: Keiko Toda Discusses Her Original Album 'ACTRESS' (Part 1)

Act 4: Discussing the Original Album 'ACTRESS' (1)

The original album 'ACTRESS,' released as she resumes her singing career after 33 years, features 10 tracks. She herself explains this 'second debut as a singer,' where she sang as if acting.

The culmination of my work and self over the past decade...

I love performing live, and I've always held concerts every ten years, marking milestones at ages 30 and 40. Of course, when I turned 50, my friends encouraged me to do a live show, and I had been planning it for a few years. However, while solo concerts are enjoyable, they are an incredibly demanding undertaking. It takes me time to decide, 'I'm going to do it!' (laughs).

This time, I felt it was a particularly significant milestone for me, so I gave it the subtitle 'HAPPY? HALF CENTURY.'
Reflecting on myself and my work over the past decade, my staff suggested, 'Why not create something tangible?' This led to the album production, which I hadn't even considered.
So, the order of events was: turning 50 → anniversary concert → album.

A dreamlike triangle was formed.

The recording of the original album 'ACTRESS' coincided perfectly with my appearance in the stage play 'The Hit Parade' this summer, which meant I was working late into the night.

I asked Koki Mitani myself.
In Mitani-san's directorial debut, 'The Glorious Time,' the enka singer 'Chihonsen-nokko,' whom I played, sang a song called 'Watari ni Fune' in the film. I asked if we could complete its fictional coupling track, 'Wagamama Boogie.'

Once the lyrics were ready, I asked Mitani-san if he had a composer in mind. He replied, 'For boogie, it has to be Ryudo Uzaki,' so I reached out to him, even though we had never met. He readily agreed, and thus, a dreamlike triangle was completed.
I am truly grateful to both Mitani-san and Uzaki-san for joining me at the studio at midnight.

Yasushi Akimoto and I have known each other since my days as an unknown singer. He was a budding scriptwriter for variety shows back then.

Akimoto-san requested that I sing a chanson. This was recorded in one take with the accompanist, with the performance, dialogue, and vocals all captured almost in a single go.
Akimoto-san said, 'I'm already thinking about the next one' (laughs).
