Yokomachi: Living in a Fantastical Realm, Yamakawa: Pursuing Realistic Bodily Expression to the Extreme
For many years, the music laboratory Shinsekai in Roppongi has been a crucible for experimentation across theater, dance, and fashion, birthing numerous masterpieces. It is within this legendary space that 'ASYMMETRIA' unfolds—a live performance celebrating the unique chemistry ignited by the encounter between Keiko Yokomachi, an actress who inhabits the world of narrative, and Fuyuki Yamakawa, a throat singer and visual artist.
Actress Keiko Yokomachi, with a career spanning since the age of four, has participated in albums and concerts by artists such as Ryuichi Sakamoto and Akiko Yano. Beyond her acting, she has also excelled as a choreographer and appeared in films, including those by director Sion Sono. After a hiatus due to paralysis from a stroke in 2010, she made a remarkable stage comeback last September.
Fuyuki Yamakawa, on the other hand, is an artist who transcends the boundaries of music, contemporary art, and performing arts. He excels in performances that diffuse his own body into sound and light through technology, and is also renowned as a master of 'throat singing,' a traditional vocal technique from Southern Siberia. His installations, exploring themes of voice and memory, are held in the collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, attesting to his stature as an artist.
In 'ASYMMETRIA,' these two artists converge. Exploring the asymmetrical elements residing in the human mind and body, how will Yokomachi, who lives in a world of fantasy, and Yamakawa, who pushes realistic bodily expression to its limits using bone conduction microphones and electronic stethoscopes, create their stage?
We eagerly anticipate experiencing this luxurious live performance, where the 'contrasting' yet 'symmetrical' two coexist, merge, and weave their artistry.
