Edible Art Installation "OPEN" Makes Its Japanese Debut!
An Art Event Connecting Producers, Chefs, Artists, and Consumers
Edible Art Installation "OPEN" Makes Its Japan Debut!
"OPEN," a project born in California, USA, that fuses food and art, is coming to Japan for the first time. Its inaugural Japanese event, "OPENharvest," will be held on Wednesday, November 2nd, and Thursday, November 3rd, at Restaurant Konton, located on the basement floor of the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo.

Theme: "Harvest"
"OPEN" is a food and art project initiated by chefs from Chez Panisse, an organic restaurant in Berkeley, California, with the aim of exploring "transparency in food, connecting the farm to the table." Since its inception in 2008 with "OPENsoil," which focused on soil, the project has hosted events such as "OPENfuture," featuring the butchering and cooking of a whole roasted cow in front of participants, and "OPENwater," centered on water and aquatic resources. These events encourage participants to explore the background and stories of food while enjoying a meal.
This marks the first time "OPEN" is being held in Japan, with the theme "harvest." Focusing on Japan's rich food culture, the event will feature installations utilizing seasonal ingredients from producers, chefs, and artists.
Among the offerings will be game meats such as wild deer and birds, which are culled in large numbers annually—around 450,000—yet only about 10% are utilized for consumption. These 'gibier' are rarely encountered in our daily diets. The potential of future food sources will be explored through an art performance and workshop titled "Nippon Gibier." Additionally, the event will highlight "rice," an indispensable staple for Japanese people, and will host a farmers' market featuring producers from various regions, creating a space for interaction among producers, chefs, artists, and attendees.
Furthermore, as a launch event for "OPEN," a community revitalization event will take place on the evening of Tuesday, October 25th, in the Kamiyama-cho area of Shibuya Ward, featuring collaborations between Californian and Japanese food and art at various restaurants and venues, promising a packed schedule.
"OPENharvest," an "edible installation," bridges the worlds of food and art. This event promises to offer a fresh perspective on our "food," which is sustained by a multitude of blessings and lives.
