Part 44: Tales of "Shelter" – Campfires
The 44th: Tales of "Home" - A Bonfire Edition
A wisp of smoke rising into a clear sky, once a quintessential winter scene. Nowadays, the scent of burning fallen leaves from a "bonfire" has become a rarity, and even the familiar melody of "Over the fence, over the fence, around the corner..." is heard less and less.

What Fire Gives Us
In urban areas, the very environment for bonfires has become a luxury, perhaps due to a lack of ground space, a scarcity of burnable deciduous trees, environmental concerns, and safety issues in densely populated residential areas. Some municipalities even have ordinances prohibiting bonfires without a permit.
While not exactly a city, I live in an environment where I can't easily enjoy a bonfire. So, whenever I visit my mountain cabin, I seize the opportunity to start one. Gathering twigs and dead branches from all around to build a fire instantly transports me back to my boyhood. The crackling sound of the burning wood and the slightly smoky aroma evoke a deep sense of nostalgia. And the flames, dancing and flickering like living things, bring a sense of peace to my heart. Their sheer beauty captivates me, making me lose all track of time. Of course, the sake I sip while relaxing around the bonfire tastes exceptionally good.
In terms of evolution, the differences between humans and animals are said to be "bipedal locomotion," "the ability to use tools," and "the use of fire." While wild animals fear fire, humans have mastered it as a tool. We harness its light for illumination, its warmth for heat, and its power for cooking. Furthermore, by gazing into the flames, we gain a profound sense of security.
Every time I have a bonfire, I feel the strength of human instinct and sense the primal part of myself truly alive.
Enjoying the Beauty of Flames

Although the environment around my home no longer allows for casual bonfires, simply lighting candles indoors can bring a sense of peace and allow for a leisurely passage of time. While lighting multiple candles in a candelabra, as is common in Western countries, creates a wonderful atmosphere, that too can be challenging. Perhaps the most accessible way to enjoy the beauty of flames is with container candles that can be lit as they are. While they may not offer the same intensity as a bonfire, they certainly provide ample enjoyment of the flames' beauty.
First, take a moment to gaze at the warm hues and the gently flickering flames. You'll surely be captivated by their beauty, and your mood will gradually become more relaxed.
I've heard that nowadays, "bonfire kits" that allow for safe bonfires within a can are even sold online. While the environment for bonfires has become more restrictive across Japan, perhaps there are actually many enthusiasts.
When you light a fire, people naturally gather. Sipping drinks while watching the flickering flames would surely lead to relaxation and lively conversation.
In any case, with the air being dry this season, please be extremely careful with fire safety and burns.
