The stage play "Goodnight Sleep Tight" is now playing to rave reviews!

PARCO Theatre Play "Goodnight Sleep Tight" Now Showing to Rave Reviews!

Following a four-day preview run, Koki Mitani's "Goodnight Sleep Tight," a two-person play starring Keiko Toda and Kiichi Nakai, premiered successfully on November 23rd.
This play offers a different flavor from Mitani's previous works, with a bittersweet story. We had a brief chat about the behind-the-scenes of this production, which also reveals a "new side" of Toda.

I've Always Dreamed of Performing in a Two-Person Play

Mitani previously wrote and directed a solo play for me called "Naniwa Butterfly," which was a challenging yet rewarding experience, offering many valuable lessons. "Goodnight Sleep Tight" is a two-person play. Truthfully, ever since my days as a theater company trainee, I've harbored a desire to perform in a two-person play. There are so many sophisticated two-person plays in other countries, and I've always dreamed of performing in one, imagining the mature, chic, slightly stoic, and high-brow image they possess.

And now, that long-held dream has finally come true. To top it off, with Mitani directing and writing, and Kiichi Nakai as my co-star – the ultimate, strongest combination! The play is packed with songs and dance numbers, and the rehearsals were demanding, but every day was so fulfilling that time seemed to fly by.

The story follows a married couple through 30 years of their lives, with the timeline jumping back and forth. It's a very busy progression, moving from their 20s when they met, through aging and de-aging with quick costume changes (laughs). The "wife" I play shows various facets of herself over those 30 years. Initially, she's a bit naive and dependent, but as time passes and she gains experience, she becomes independent. This is different from the women I've played before, so I believe the audience will get to see a different side of Keiko Toda.

Furthermore, Mitani, who is usually shy, has depicted the nuances of a woman's heart and the shifts in feelings between men and women with incredible depth and acuity, so you should also witness the further evolution of Koki Mitani as a writer.

In addition to the two actors on stage, there are four musicians providing live accompaniment, offering plenty of enjoyment unique to a live performance.

We sincerely hope many people will come to see the show, which runs until December 28th (Sunday)!!
