Tokyo Dome to Host Verona Arena's 'Aida'

The Verona Arena, a stage for Italy's quintessential summer tradition, the outdoor opera festival, is an ancient Roman amphitheater. For 'Aida,' a special performance featuring the arena's magnificent stage sets, a full orchestra, chorus, dancers, and even a world-renowned conductor and star singers, will be held at Tokyo Dome from Tuesday, September 17th to Thursday, September 19th.

Celebrating 100 Years of the Verona Arena and 200 Years of Verdi's Birth

The Verona Arena began in 1913 with an outdoor opera festival held at the site of an ancient Roman amphitheater, commemorating the 100th anniversary of composer Giuseppe Verdi's birth. Blessed with acoustics that allow the faintest stage whispers to be heard, it is a sacred site for opera lovers worldwide who gather there each summer.

The 'Aida' coming to Japan, an opera that represents Italy, is a commemorative special performance celebrating both the 100th anniversary of the Verona Arena's founding and Verdi's 200th birthday. The production is by Franco Zeffirelli, also known as a film director, and the conductor is Daniel Oren, who studied under Leonard Bernstein and Herbert von Karajan and serves as the Verona Arena's principal conductor. Furthermore, Plácido Domingo, one of the Three Tenors and active as a singer, conductor, and artistic director, participates as honorary director.

As for the opera singers, the lead role of Radamès, the young Egyptian general, will be performed by Roberto Alagna, hailed as a new tenor star for his lyrical voice. The heroine, Aida, an Ethiopian princess enslaved, will be portrayed by the beautiful prima donna Fiorenza Cedolins, with many other star singers performing.

In addition, 120 members of the full orchestra, a chorus of 150 singers, and all the various staff essential for the performance will "move" to Tokyo Dome. Everything that makes the Verona Arena's 'Aida' so special is coming.

This is truly a "miracle performance" where Italy's supreme masterpiece, a jewel of opera, can be seen in Japan. The world of 'Aida,' brought to life by a gathering of masters and stars, will surely be etched into your heart as an unforgettable night.
