The Mesmerizing Brilliance of Gems Inspires Unprecedented Movement
Nearly 50 years after the premiere of George Balanchine's "Jewels," a ballet inspired by Van Cleef & Arpels' creations, the Maison once again collaborates with the world of dance. From Thursday, May 23 to Saturday, May 25, 2013, at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, French dancer and choreographer Benjamin Millepied will present "Reflections," a new work born from his encounter with the high jewelry Maison, Van Cleef & Arpels.
Just as George Balanchine was captivated by the colors and forms of gemstones, Benjamin Millepied too is enthralled by their sparkle. This original creation, where the play of light, countless facets, and the radiance emanating from their edges inspire unprecedented movement in the human form, is said to be an homage to the enchanting brilliance of jewels. Also noteworthy are the original score composed by David Lang and the stage and costume design by American artist Barbara Kruger.
This collaboration stems from a long-standing partnership between the Maison and L.A. Dance Project, an ensemble founded by Benjamin Millepied. L.A. Dance Project aims to expand the boundaries of dance by bringing together individuals with rich creative visions to collaborate on projects. Their partnership began in 2012. "Reflections," to be performed this time, is the first installment in a trilogy titled "Gems" and will be one of its highlights.
This collaboration, transcending the realms of jewelry and dance to connect within the sphere of art, leaves us eagerly anticipating the completion of the trilogy.
