INTERVIEW | fabric Founder Keith Reilly

From London to Tokyo: Keith Reilly's New Challenge (Part 1)

Located just outside the heart of London is the club "fabric." Day and night, a myriad of music resonates, drawing people not only from the UK but from all over the world, seeking its refined sound and atmosphere. The founder of "fabric," Keith Reilly, is expanding his activities, which have so far been confined to London. He is now making Tokyo his second base. What is his vision for the next stage?

London's Most Talked-About Club

In East London, near Smithfield Market, there's a place that overflows with young people as night falls. In London, pubs and bars close before midnight. Those who haven't had their fill or are craving music are drawn here. Especially on Friday and Saturday nights, the area buzzes like a festival. This is "fabric," the world's most influential nightclub.

"fabric," a fusion of the best music, sound system, and people, opened in 1999. Since then, it has become a hub not only for house and techno but also for unique London dance music genres like jungle, 2-step, and dubstep.

“There are so many unique movements and scenes in London. Of course, there’s dubstep and deep minimal house, but techno and hip-hop are still popular. Music of all genres, from the 1990s to the present, has always been overflowing. At ‘fabric,’ we’ve opened our doors to all this music, cherished it, nurtured it, and provided a stage. Our mission is to support what is growing and evolving right now.”

These are the words of Keith Reilly, the founder of "fabric." For over 30 years, he has discovered new music through various means and led the club culture scene in London and around the world.

“In the last five to six years, there was a new movement, especially using dubstep. But now, those who were doing dubstep are returning to house, exploring new possibilities within it. If you go to a London nightclub, you'll hear evolved house music. Music is very fluid, like a living thing, constantly growing.”

Japanese Culture Flows Beneath the Surface

"Support the scene." Keith Reilly keenly yet warmly watches over London's club scene. It turns out that his activities are deeply influenced by Japanese culture.

“Japanese culture is indispensable to my creativity. I've loved Japan since I was 14, and Ryuichi Sakamoto was my baptism. He brought me a new dimension, a kind of 'blessed light.' I can't explain enough how much it influenced my life. Through him, I learned about the Japanese perspective and way of thinking. That sense of ultimate delicacy, as if gazing at something extraordinary, was incredibly fresh to me, immersed as I was in the rougher Western culture. Most of what we create now is simply a manifestation of what I learned and was influenced by from Japan.”

Will "fabric Tokyo" Open?

This is Keith Reilly's first visit to Japan, but he plans to visit frequently in the future. He maintains a routine of being at "fabric" every weekend, despite his demanding schedule. Why does he make time for Japan?

“To become fluent in Japanese, which I love (laughs). Just kidding, but actually... I've established a new office for "fabric" in Japan. As I mentioned, Japan's unique way of seeing and thinking constantly influences our activities. Therefore, the first step for "fabric" to move to the next stage had to be from Japan, in the East. By establishing a new office in Tokyo, I want to learn the Japanese way of doing things – in terms of the company's positioning, perspective, and understanding. Through this, our intentions will become purer, evolving into something better.”

A British boy, captivated by Japan during his most impressionable years, is now, after a long time, beginning his long-awaited activities based in Japan. Everyone expects Keith Reilly, who has achieved this dream, to open "fabric Tokyo."

“At the moment, there are no plans for "fabric" to open a store in Tokyo. However, projects in Japan are underway. Around November this year, we will hold a major art project with Diesel. Of course, we are considering a "fabric Tokyo" in the future, but first, I want to learn the Japanese way of thinking naturally and take steady, step-by-step progress. Through this, perhaps "fabric Tokyo" will materialize, or it might manifest in a different form. I don't know what the future holds, but I want to create a new scene in Japan, my second home. I'm not going back to London (laughs).”

What impact will Keith Reilly, a leading figure in the global club scene, have on Japan's creative scene? His future endeavors are certainly worth watching.
