Featuring Works and Artists with an “Anti-Temporal” Approach to Sound and Music
Since 2012, PARC, an international performing arts exchange center, has been dedicated to promoting arts and culture and fostering international exchange. This is the organization that presents “Sound, Live, Tokyo.” The fourth iteration this year features a conceptual program showcasing works and artists who take an “anti-temporal” approach to sound and music.
Participants include not only musicians but also a diverse range of artists active in avant-garde theater, experimental film, and contemporary art, from emerging talents to veterans in their 80s. The opening event, “Miracle,” will perform a work composed by Keiji Haino. As a response to John Cage's “4'33”,” Haino composed a piece where 88 performers simultaneously play each of the 88 keys of a piano with a single finger.
A concert will feature the suite “Songs of Capricorn,” jointly composed by the maverick composer Giacinto Scelsi and the now 92-year-old soprano singer Michiko Hirayama. Maki Ota, who received direct instruction from Hirayama, will perform the entire suite. This event takes place on Monday, October 12th, at SuperDeluxe in Nishi-Azabu.
Furthermore, Ken Jacobs, an experimental filmmaker still active at 82, will manually operate his own custom-built projector, eschewing both film and video. In “Nervous Magic Lantern,” held on Tuesday, November 3rd, at Spiral Hall, his real-time generated 3D visuals will be met with a response from Akira Onoda, who uses a cassette Walkman as a “musical instrument” to create sounds from everyday noises.
With approximately 10 programs, “Sound, Live, Tokyo” promises to deeply stimulate the senses and invite audiences into a profound world that embraces boundary-crossing. Don't miss this opportunity to experience performances that can only be seen here.
