A Theater Lover's Dream in New York!

I managed to secure a week off! To visit my beloved New York, I had to cram my work schedule, and as expected, or rather, more than ever, my schedule before and after was packed… But that’s okay. I had to bring a lot of homework too… But that’s okay! So, from June 29th to July 5th, I went to New York. Of course, the purpose was to immerse myself in theater!

Rest, Drink, and Watch!

My days off are limited to about a week at most. In New York, I only go to see plays, so the challenge is how to fit in Wednesdays and Saturdays, with their matinee and evening performances, into my travel dates, but this time it worked out. I left Japan on a Tuesday and arrived in New York on the same Tuesday.

The number of plays I saw was seven: Tuesday/Wednesday/Wednesday/Thursday/Friday/Saturday/Saturday. I left New York on Sunday and returned to Japan on Monday, making for a remarkably efficient schedule.

New York Theater Immersion 01

Although it had been scorching hot in New York before my arrival, the weather during my stay was wonderfully pleasant. It must be because I've been good all year round (laughs). Besides theater, I always take it very easy. Since it's my time off, I rest. I even sleep when I'm in New York (laughs). Actually, I visited New York last September, so this is my second visit in less than a year, but there were surprisingly few shows that caught my eye. Therefore, this theater tour is focused on titles like, 'But I have to see the Tony Award-winning works!'

Come Fly Away

June 29 (Tue) | Come Fly Away
On the day I arrived in New York, I always choose a lighter production because of the jet lag. For my first day, I selected 'Come Fly Away.' It's a dance show set to the many hit songs of Frank Sinatra. The choreographer was the same person who worked on 'Movin' Out,' a show I saw before. Twyla Tharp's popular work, with its big band sound, was wonderful. And of course, Sinatra's singing. Still, New York theaters are as excessively air-conditioned as ever…

Rock of Ages

June 30 (Wed) | Matinee | Rock of Ages
I couldn't sleep well the night before, woke up in the middle of the night, had a beer, and then slept in until past 1 PM. Still, since I was staying right in the heart of Broadway, I had plenty of time for the 2 PM matinee performance (laughs). The story is a coming-of-age tale of young people who love rock music, told through hit songs from the 1980s. There are many shows like this recently, aren't there? They aren't original songs… just like 'Come Fly Away.'

La Cage aux Folles

Evening Performance | La Cage aux Folles
As you know, 'La Cage aux Folles.' This production, originally from London, is receiving rave reviews in New York. It was truly magnificent… I was moved to tears! It premiered in 1983, I believe. I think it's a masterpiece depicting family love through a gay couple. I couldn't stop crying during the famous song 'I Am What I Am.'

After this, there was a bit of a commotion trying to get a FAX sent from Japan in the middle of the night. When you're abroad, simple things can be quite difficult… sigh. It arrived safely, and I went to bed between 2 AM and 4 AM, woke up, drank more beer while watching a DVD of the Tony Awards, went to sleep at 7 AM, and woke up at 3:30 PM. My life was completely out of sorts (laughs).

Promises, Promises

New York Theater Immersion 02

July 1 (Thu) | Promises, Promises

I really wanted to see 'Promises, Promises.' Based on the film 'The Apartment,' I myself played the role of Fran, the heroine, during my theater company days. I also love Burt Bacharach's music, and I still often hum 'I’ll Never Fall in Love Again.' In short, it was a word of 'nostalgia.'

After seeing a play, I always stop by a deli and eat at my hotel. That night, I went to bed at 2:30 AM, woke up at 4 AM, and again, drank beer in the morning (laughs). I ended up not being able to sleep until morning, and this New York stay was plagued by jet lag.

July 2 (Fri) | The Addams Family

The characters are so much fun! It's the familiar antics of the spooky Addams Family. And since my favorite Nathan Lane is in it, the fun was doubled. This was the only show for which I bought a souvenir T-shirt this time.

July 3 (Sat) | Matinee | Memphis - A New Musical
This was my top pick for this trip! 'Memphis.' Honestly, the jet lag since arriving in New York was severe, and I still hadn't slept well that day, feeling sleep-deprived. Moreover, I had a substantial meal right before the performance, so I was convinced I would fall asleep watching it… I had resigned myself to it. But, as soon as the curtain rose, my eyes snapped open from the sheer power! The impact! It was overwhelming! Sleeping was out of the question! It's about the love and struggles of a white DJ who fell in love with Black music. It was truly wonderful!

July 3 (Sat) | Evening Performance | Fela!

Fela is a person's name. This work depicts the life of Fela Kuti, a Nigerian musician who was also active as a Black liberation activist. It's a transfer from an off-Broadway production, and the performance was passionate.

Fela!

It was a shame that 'A Little Night Music,' which was one of my initial targets for this visit, could not be seen because Catherine Zeta-Jones's run had ended, and it was precisely during the break between cast changes. I'll definitely see it next time! And this trip, like others, was a comfortable journey with Yuji Mitsuya. It was a cycle of resting, drinking, and watching! We returned home, vowing to work hard so we could go to New York again.
