“Minimalism Rooted in Reality, and Neo-Classicism”

Fashion journalist Yuri Yokoi believes the current direction of fashion is shifting towards a minimalism rooted in reality, achieved by prioritizing comfort and a relaxed feel from a woman's perspective. What are the representative looks of this trend?

1. What trends caught your eye this season?

“The keyword is ‘minimalism.’ The minimalism Phoebe Philo expressed at Celine is distinct from previous fashion-forward approaches; it’s a minimalism grounded in reality. It was perfected by prioritizing comfort and a relaxed feel from a woman’s perspective, and I believe the current direction of fashion is increasingly shifting towards that. Stella McCartney’s minimalism has a unique flavor, being based on British tradition. Meanwhile, Yves Saint Laurent offers a minimalist aesthetic with a strong fashion sensibility, expressing the elegance Monsieur Saint Laurent pursued in a contemporary way.”

“Another keyword is ‘neo-classic.’ Dries Van Noten is noteworthy for transforming American tradition into a European style, resulting in a sophisticated, adult take on tradition. The collection evoked a 1950s mood while feeling entirely new. Louis Vuitton’s look, featuring voluminous skirts paired with long gloves, is symbolic. It seems to suggest that new luxury lies in a relaxed, glamorous 1950s mood for women, neither too casual nor too dressy.”

2. Are there any trends in accessories, like shoes and bags, that interest you?

“Chanel’s hot water bottle bag, full of humor. Is it practical or impractical? That’s the question! And Dries Van Noten’s voluminous leopard-print fur scarf. These two are more like items of interest than trends.”

3. Are there any items you’d genuinely like to buy?

“Celine’s pea coat and Dries Van Noten’s khaki skirt are quite appealing.”
