New Studio Opens in Narihira, Sumida Ward, Hosting "TAKAHASHI HIROKO EXHIBITION -RENOVATION-"

Preparing a Space for New Creative Endeavors

The new studio, conceived last autumn, was completed in September. In October, activities commenced in the new location in Narihira, Sumida Ward. The space, a former ironworks building nearly 50 years old, has been renovated into a flexible design adaptable to any use. Architect Tsuyoshi Nagasaka designed the studio to symbolize my philosophy of always remaining free and fluid, rather than conforming to convention. While preserving the original structure of thin steel frames welded together, a style rarely seen today, the added elements are minimal. Though the space appears simple and unadorned at first glance, closer inspection reveals meticulous attention to detail. The result is a studio that embodies Takahashi Hiroko's aesthetic, echoing my motifs of circles and straight lines.

Flexible First and Second Floors

A two-minute walk from Oshiage Station on the Tokyo Metro Hanzomon Line. Look up, and the Tokyo Skytree is close by. The location is nestled within a small shopping street that retains the charm of old Tokyo.

Stepping through the large, pristine white automatic doors that open silently into the studio, one is greeted by the first-floor space, its high ceiling reminiscent of a factory, conveying a sense of openness. This area serves as a studio capable of producing large-scale works, but it can also function as a gallery, shop, or venue for various events, fostering communication with people.

Ascending to the second floor via a staircase with comforting cedar planks, opening the door reveals a space that initially surprises with its apparent vastness, an effect amplified by the strategically placed mirrors. Although the ceiling is low, 30 tatami mats reflected in the mirrors create the illusion of a much larger room. This floor is primarily dedicated to handling my signature kimonos, but its use is open-ended. It could host exhibitions, rakugo performances, or even judo practice.

The Third Floor: A Space for Creation

The third floor is the creative hub. It features an area designated as an 'indoor terrace,' designed as a semi-open space with good ventilation for growing plants, alongside a small, cabin-like room where I work on my computer.

Cultivating plants is one of my highest priorities. With the aim of learning about 'food,' a fundamental aspect of life, I am challenging myself with the primal act of growing my own sustenance.

In addition to cultivating about 30 types of vegetables, my plant collection primarily consists of ferns. The vibrant, delicate freshness of colorful flowers makes me feel restless and unsettled, so I've chosen non-flowering ferns, with their rugged, wild appeal, as plants to keep by my side. I intend to expand this collection, aiming for a botanical garden-like atmosphere. Spending time here, sensing the vitality of plants that change and grow daily, is incredibly refreshing. I look forward to the future, to the time and the person I will become, born from this space.
