Relocated and reopened in February this year, "idea by SOSU" is a select shop operating strictly by appointment. While its curated selection of items, infused with a unique sensibility, is noteworthy, its unprecedented business model is what has garnered attention, making it a hidden gem for those in the know. Why is this salon-like style necessary now? We asked director Noe Okamoto.

The term "by appointment only" might suggest an exclusive, high-barrier VIP salon, but the spacious, modern interior, coupled with the friendly staff, creates a relaxed, unpretentious atmosphere. At "idea by SOSU," appointments are typically one hour per party and can be made via phone or email. Spontaneous calls for same-day appointments may also be accommodated depending on availability.

"I think people nowadays tend to choose clothes based solely on the 'information' they get from magazines and the internet," says Noe Okamoto, director of "idea by SOSU."





"Customers often know more about the brands than we do. They know them, they've seen them, but they haven't worn them. Information is easily accessible with a single click, but are they really wearing clothes that suit them? Do they know what suits them? That question was the catalyst for starting this appointment-only select shop seven years ago."

"Idea" is the origin of the English word "idea" and is said to represent eternal, universal values, essence, and principles that serve as criteria for judgment. This is a place brimming with encounters with "ideas," not just for its high design aesthetic, but for its curated lineup of quality items and its proposal of sophisticated, mixed coordinates for adults who grasp the essence of the times.

"Brands produce an enormous number of clothes each season, but only a fraction makes it to Japan, and the selection is often tailored to 'Japanese trends.' Rather than buyers presenting what they find cool, the choices tend to reflect customer feedback directly. But there's so much more to the brand, so much more to the season – why aren't those aspects proposed? I questioned that. I wanted to present what I genuinely thought was cool; that was one of the motivations."

The items, unbound by trends, are selected with a unique sensibility, embodying the concept of "clothes that can become vintage," destined to remain timeless. Therefore, even within the same brand, you can discover pieces not found in other select shops, making a visit worthwhile in itself.

In a relaxed atmosphere, the staff, observing the customer's appearance and demeanor and inquiring about their wardrobe, propose items they believe are perfect. The idea approach involves advising on styling points, encouraging thorough trying-on, and allowing customers to "experience the true value" of the clothing through direct touch and wear.

"We enthusiastically recommend items that customers might not choose themselves if we believe they suit them. It's simply because they haven't realized it yet. We actively propose new ideas, such as 'this makes your silhouette look better,' 'it enhances your individuality,' or 'it expands your styling options,' and encourage trying them on. Clothes truly reveal their value only when you touch them and wear them. We want this to be a place where people can discover 'good things' through seeing, touching, and experiencing – a place for realization, like 'Oh, this is what this kind of clothing is like,' or 'I've discovered a new side of myself I never expected.'"
