Vivienne Westwood is holding a pop-up event at its Aoyama store to introduce handmade accessory collections produced by Artisan.Fashion, an independent business organization in Africa, and to showcase their initiatives.
Artisan.Fashion provides opportunities for informal producers and artisans in impoverished areas to earn income, encouraging their participation in the global community. The belief is that fostering sustainable business models, rather than relying on aid, brings stability to the region.
This pop-up event will feature the 2017 Spring/Summer Artisan.Fashion bag collection, alongside a display of valuable archives.
The bags are crafted using recycled remnants of canvas and leather, as well as brass castings from Kibera (Nairobi's largest slum). African artisans then sew, cut, decorate, and cast these materials to create Vivienne Westwood bags. The event will present photographs documenting the creation process and showcase the various techniques involved.
Additionally, exclusive items for this pop-up event will be available. This is a rare opportunity to glimpse behind the scenes of bag production, something not usually seen.
