2011-12 Winter Warm Biz Feature: So-ya Oikawa at URBAN RESEARCH Shibuya
“The key is ease of layering”
So-ya Oikawa is in charge of the concept book series, produced and published by URBAN RESEARCH since 2009, which explores a different city in each issue. He also handles PR for “URBAN RESEARCH Store,” a multi-brand shop for the entire URBAN RESEARCH group, and “Kagure,” which advocates for green fashion. Here, he shares his tips for this winter’s Warm Biz.

Add elegant cardigans and striking accessories
Oikawa answered the theme “What is URBAN RESEARCH-style Warm Biz?” with “easy-to-layer cardigans.” “This time, I chose cardigans focusing on lightweight and warm mohair. I believe there’s a significant temperature difference between outdoors and indoors in the city. In addition to considering winter dryness, ease of layering is key. I think you can enjoy Warm Biz by aiming for elegant layers that aren’t too casual in any situation,” he explains.
“Cardigans are easy to use as staple items, but the long-pile mohair gives them a unique touch (laughs). I kept the other items as simple as possible to create balance.”
He also notes that as the line between workwear and casual wear blurs, accessories play an increasingly significant role in creating an impression. “Men’s fashion will become more interesting when individuality starts to be expressed through items like hats, bags, scarves, ties, watches, glasses, socks, and shoes.”
Located along Meiji Dori, ‘URBAN RESEARCH Shibuya’ is a large store that champions a “sophisticated urban casual style.” It offers a curated selection of fashion items from both domestic and international brands, alongside original brands developed with a focus on materials and sizing. The photoshoot for this feature took place on the basement floor.
Oikawa, who is responsible for planning and executing in-store promotions, says, “Our staff not only prepare necessary information but also plan events and exhibitions that customers can enjoy together with us.” Personally, he finds inspiration in the blog “TOMBOYstyle,” which showcases many examples of genderless styling, where masculine items are worn in a feminine way.
“The true winter season, when you can wear many items, is a very fun time for fashion,” says Oikawa. His personal style is definitely one to reference for your own Warm Biz efforts.
